Love them or hate them, they bring a lot of business in; they’re expensive, but no one can compete with their marketing budgets and the online exposure that they command. But are direct bookings a thing of the past? Well, only if you let them, and there are a few ways to increase your most valuable channel.

Just like TripAdvisor, Google users can now book a hotel room without ever leaving google.

Whether consumers are searching for lava lamps or hotel rooms, Google has always been focused on providing users with an incomparable user experience across all devices. While Google has always provided users with information about hotels through Google Search, Google Maps, and Google+, the search engine giant is now letting users instantly book rooms with "Book on Google." Similar to TripAdvisor's Instant Booking initiative, Book on Google allows users to finish the entire booking process without ever venturing out from its comfortable interface.

In January of 2015, Expedia purchased Travelocity and agreed to purchase Orbitz Worldwide the previous month. Not to be outdone by Expedia, another OTA giant The Priceline Group countered with its acquisition of Rocketmiles in February.

When I was working as a travel agent during the early 2000's, people routinely came into the agency to plan their travel arrangements. Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) were already gaining momentum, but people still relied on our experience and advice to book travel. Since then, the OTAs have only surged in popularity with more and more information available to travelers online for them to make informed decisions and ultimately make the purchase transaction online.
