World Tourism Day is a United Nations backed celebration of all things tourism all over the world. The day is in operation since 1980 and since then it marks the day in world tourism based on how the industry positively impacts the world in terms of cultural, economic, social and political values and principles. Each year has a specific theme and this year's theme is "sustainable tourism". Since 1997, each day is "hosted" by a specific assigned country which also holds special events on the day; Qatar is the host country for 2017.
